I certainly wouldn't want to live in Leeds, Bradford or Manchester. "Other than that it's quite peaceful, people get along and I'm happy to live here. Where I live is a nice environment but on a lot of the streets, there's a lack of pride with people just dumping mattresses and dirty stuff. "It's good that we have Ravensthorpe Park but if you have kids I'm not sure you would feel happy having them play in it as it's not safe. And if you have a car there's the constant worry about whether it might be broken into overnight. "Having said that I wouldn't want to walk around here of an evening because I would be worried about getting robbed by low lifers. I live with my family all around me and we have CCTV security. She said: "I've lived all my life here and it's a nice place to live and people are friendly. When we had Covid they brought us food which was great and cheered us all up. "Having said that the Asian community are pretty sociable. "I'm from Merseyside originally and that's supposed to be a rough area but it's better than this. "I have never felt safe here," Jennifer said. Walking along the main drag in Ravensthorpe, Kirklees' poorest neighbourhood it's easy to imagine it is just like many other former industrial areas we know so well in West Yorkshire.Īpart from a complete absence of pubs, Huddersfield Road could be almost any high street with the usual mix of convenience stores and fast-food takeaways, though the presence of a fireworks shop is an anomaly.
